Financial inclusion

Our goal is to enable more people to enter and advance within the financial system and support the financial wellness of our employees.

In 2023, we formed a cross functional task force and conducted internal and external research to develop our first Financial Inclusion North Star Goal.

This goal may be new, but financial inclusion and literacy have always been part of who we are.

Pathway to financial success
Pathway to Financial Success is a program we launched to empower students to take control of their financial futures. Our program includes a comprehensive financial literacy curriculum that comes to life through classroom and family activities, and is offered at no cost to middle and high schools.

“This allows my students who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds to be empowered and know that they can do more than just survive paycheck to paycheck.”

Community development

Our community centers
Our Chatham Customer Care Center, serving Chicago’s South Side, has set the precedent for site selection, hiring procedures, customer service experience, and community development. We’re now scaling this model and investing in the neighborhoods where we have offices.

For more information about the additional community outreach activities across all our center locations, check out our employee volunteering section below.

“When companies like Discover enter into the community, it closes the gap of hope. Parents are able to reach a new level of esteem and children begin to look at their parents differently.”
Takeshi M. James
Principal of Avalon Park School of Fine & Performing Arts

Employee volunteering and giving
Volunteerism is one of our Core Values. Our volunteer program—You Care, We Share—allows employees to earn rewards that they can donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice. Every year, our employees donate thousands of dollars to charities across the country and we match their donations through the You Care, We Share Employee Giving Program.

Employees across the country volunteer with nonprofit partners and programs on behalf of Discover, helping expand our reach to communities throughout the United States.

Donations and nonprofit sponsorships
Discover initiates most of its donations and sponsorships. We are committed to supporting the many volunteer efforts of our employees and have an interest in supporting financial education. If you believe your organization aligns with our charitable interests and fulfills our criteria, please access our online grant application tool.

Community Reinvestment Act
We have been invested in the mid-Atlantic region as part of our commitment to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). This is a federal law designed to encourage financial institutions to meet the credit needs of the communities in which they operate, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

Business diversity

We are intentional in selecting the suppliers and businesses we partner with every day. When we form a relationship with a third party—whether they’re local providers for regional offices or company-wide service providers—it’s important that we find the best possible partners who share our commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social impact.
