When you carry a balance on a credit card, the interest charges could add up. A low intro APR on your account means you will pay less in interest charges during the introductory period.
Maybe you have an unexpected expense, or you want to take a big trip and you haven’t saved enough to pay for it in advance. When you have a 0% Intro APR on purchases, you won’t be charged interest on purchases during the intro period. But be sure to pay at least the monthly minimum due and more if you can. Once the intro period expires, the standard purchase APR will apply to the remaining balance.
If you’ve run up a balance on a high interest rate credit card, you can transfer it to a Discover Card with a 0% Intro APR on balance transfers. When you have a low intro rate on your account, you can transfer it to a card with a 0% Intro APR on balance transfers. Be sure to understand the amount of the balance transfer fee, so you can accurately predict your potential savings. Any remaining balance at the end of the intro period will accrue interest at the standard rate.

Using credit responsibly to establish and maintain a good credit history may help you qualify for a low intro APR. Responsible use of credit may include paying your bills by the due date and keeping your balances low.
APR, or annual percentage rate, is the interest rate on a credit card account stated as a yearly rate. When you have a credit card with a standard APR and you carry a balance, you’ll be charged interest on your purchases. A 0% intro APR credit card means that the interest rate is temporarily zero. So, a credit card with a 0% intro APR offer on purchases lets you carry a balance during the offer period without accruing interest.
If you don’t pay your entire balance in full and on time each month, you will be charged interest on your purchases. With a 0% intro APR on purchases, you pay no interest on your purchases for the length of the introductory period. You do have to pay the minimum monthly payment even when you have a 0% APR during the intro period. Once the intro period ends, the APR will return to the standard purchase APR, so it’s a good idea to plan to pay off your balance in full before the end of the 0% APR intro term.
Yes, you'll earn cash back or Miles on new purchases made on your Discover Card, whether or not you’re using a 0% intro APR offer. Balances from other cards that you transfer to your Discover Card won’t earn cash back or Miles rewards, but you’ll continue to earn rewards on any purchases you make on your new credit card.
Intro APR offers vary by lender. Discover offers credit cards with low intro APR periods of up to 15 months, depending on which card you qualify for. Checking to see if you’re pre-approved is fast, easy and won’t impact your credit score.4
During the introductory period, you won't owe any interest. But if you don't pay off the balance in full before the end of the introductory period, any unpaid balance will accumulate interest at the credit card's standard interest rate.
The interest rate on your credit card doesn't affect your credit score, but opening a new credit card account can temporarily impact your score. And remember, if you run up a high balance because you have a low introductory interest rate, you may increase your credit utilization ratio and impact your credit score. However, opening a new account and keeping the balance low can improve your credit score, so once you pay off the purchases you make on your new account, your credit score may go up.
Some 0% Intro APR card offers temporarily give you an interest rate of zero on new purchases, and other credit cards offer a 0% Intro APR only on balance transfers. Some Discover Cards offer a 0% Intro APR on both purchases and balance transfers.
Usually a 0% Intro APR balance transfer offer comes with a fixed transfer fee that you pay upon transferring your balance.
When the low introductory APR period ends, the interest rate will revert to the card's standard APR as shown in the terms. This is why it's good to have a repayment plan in mind when transferring a balance so you have a $0 balance by time the intro period ends.
