How can you make the most of a rewards credit card?

Two women sitting at a desk in an office, discussing documents

Think about your immediate and your long-term needs. Do you need a balance transfer or a low intro APR? And after account opening, does your card reward you for the purchases you are most likely to make? Does the card have good security, customer service, and an annual fee that you can afford?

There are two factors to consider with any credit card rewards program: how you can earn and how you can redeem. You want to earn rewards where you spend money most frequently. But redeeming is almost more important: make sure your rewards are worth the same or more when you redeem them, and that you can use them in ways that are meaningful to you (things like cash, a statement credit to pay yourself back for travel, to make purchases at merchants, to get gift cards to your favorite brands, etc.).

Some rewards credit cards, like the Discover it® Cash Back credit card, have a base rewards earning rate AND extra rewards on certain purchases. Make sure you know when those bonus categories are active and how to maximize rewards on eligible purchases. Plus, once you have the rewards card you may be able to add it to your mobile wallet to make sure you always have it on hand to use and earn.

No matter what rewards credit card you have, remember that the reward percentage you earn likely isn't as much as what you are charged in interest on purchases. By paying your balance in full and on time, you avoid any interest charges that could cost you more than the rewards you racked up.

How can you redeem your credit card rewards?

Use your rewards to shop for what you need or want. Earn cash back you can spend with Discover. One dollar earned is worth one dollar you can spend.5 And 100 Miles = $1 to redeem6.

You can redeem your rewards for cash or a statement credit. Discover lets you turn your rewards into cash or a statement credit. Redeem any amount, any time.7

Discover cash back credit cards also let you redeem for gift cards to popular brands. Get gift cards with at least 5% added value on every card.

Your rewards never expire.7

Rewards credit card FAQs

Credit card rewards are a way for you to earn spendable currency in exchange for eligible purchases-so it’s important to remember that the rewards points you earn are only valuable if you can use them for what you want, when you want.

There are lots of great rewards credit cards. But deciding which is the best rewards credit card for you depends on your unique needs, including your credit score and likelihood for credit approval. (If you don’t have a credit history or are new to credit, consider a rewards credit card like the Discover it® Secured Credit Card or a Discover® Student Cash Back Card.) Once you know what rewards cards you are eligible for, consider the everyday rewards, bonus rewards, and annual fee of each credit card. And remember: a card with an annual fee may cost more than the rewards are worth.

No, you don’t have to pay income tax on rewards that you earn or redeem. If you use rewards as cash to pay for purchases, however, the purchases may be subject to sales tax as normal. Additionally, if you deposit your rewards as cash into an interest-earning savings account, you will be taxed on any interest earned.

First ask yourself what kind of rewards best fit your spending and lifestyle. Love to travel? The ultimate rewards card for you might be the Discover it® Miles Card, a travel rewards card that gives you 1.5x Miles on every single purchase with no annual fee. Turn Miles into cash. Or redeem as a statement credit for your travel purchases like hotels, rideshares, gas stations, restaurants and more.8  Discover is the only major credit card that gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you've earned at the end of your first year.1

Or if you spend a lot on groceries, gas, or restaurants, the Discover it® Cash Back Card might be a better fit. Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate. Plus, earn 1% cash back on all other purchases-automatically. Only Discover has unlimited Cashback Match for all new cardmembers: we’ll match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year.1

Remember, Discover has no annual fee on any of our cards.

Discover offers cash back and Miles rewards. Compare the rewards categories to see which ones match your spending habits or offers the rewards redemption you can use most.

If you're looking for a cash back rewards credit card, consider a cash back rewards card like the Discover it® Cash Back Card. Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter like grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and more, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate. Plus, earn 1% cash back on all other purchases-automatically.9 Other cash back rewards cards have different earnings categories. For example, the Discover Gas & Restaurants credit card lets you earn 2% Cashback Bonus® at Gas Stations and Restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, automatically. Plus earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.2

If you prefer to earn Miles, check out the Discover it® Miles Card. Turn Miles into cash. Or redeem as a statement credit for your travel purchases like hotels, rideshares, gas stations, restaurants, and more.8 We automatically match all of the cash back or Miles that you’ve earned at the end of your first year. There’s no limit to how much we’ll match.1

No. Whether you earn cash back or Miles on your Discover Card, your rewards never expire.7 That means that you never have to worry about losing the rewards that you earned on your Discover it® Cash Back Card or your Discover it® Miles Card.

Every credit card rewards program is different, so don’t assume that all rewards credit card options are equal. Different cards may call their rewards different things, but generally credit card rewards are a form of currency earned as a percentage back of the amount that you charge on your credit card for purchases.

Your credit card issuer has rules about how you can redeem your rewards (which means how you can spend the rewards in the real world). Even a cash rewards credit card may have limitations about how you actually get the cash to use or apply conversion rates at redemption that reduce the value of the rewards that you’ve earned.

There’s no single rule that applies to every rewards credit card, so it’s a good idea to fully read the cardmember agreement that comes with your credit card to make sure you know how you can earn the most and get the most from your rewards.
