No-fee overdraft services FAQ

An overdraft occurs when you don't have enough money in your account to cover a purchase or payment, and the bank allows that purchase or payment to go through.

Discover does not charge fees if we pay, return, or decline a transaction. Discover does not charge overdraft fees, insufficient funds fees, and returned item fees. There are also no fees for enrolling in or using any of Discover's Overdraft Services. You can avoid declined transactions by signing up for Discover's Overdraft Services like Overdraft Protection and Balance+.

Balance+ is a no-fee overdraft coverage that applies to your debit card transactions. It is not available to cover checks, ATM/Cash withdrawals, or other electronic payments, such as Zelle®. Repayment is due immediately. Balance+ is provided at our discretion, and we may decline to cover any debit card transaction, for example, if we suspect the transaction is fraudulent. Please review the agreement as other terms and conditions apply.

Overdraft Protection provides a link between your Discover accounts (checking, money market, and/or savings accounts) that transfers funds to help avoid the incovenience of returned items and insufficient funds. When you enroll your account in Discover's no fee Overdraft Protection, you will designate one account (funding account) to cover eligible transactions in another account (protected account) that would otherwise be returned unpaid.

Overdraft Protection covers:

  • ACH transfers initiated at another bank
  • Checks you write
  • Online bill payments

It does not cover transactions such as:

  • ACH transfers initiated at Discover
  • ATM transactions
  • Debit card transactions
  • Payments made with Zelle®
  • Wire transfers

See the Overdraft Protection Service Agreement for complete details.

Zelle® and the Zelle® related marks are wholly owned by Early Warning Services, LLC and are used herein under license.

For ACH transfers initiated at another bank, checks, and online bill payments, we will notify you when your account does not have enough money to cover a transaction we received for payment. If money is not added to your account within a specific time, we will return the transaction unpaid.

For all other transaction types, like debit card purchases, we will automatically decline the transaction if your account doesn't have enough money.

Discover does not charge fees for returned items or insufficient funds.

You can also sign up to receive alerts to notify you when your account is running low on funds to help you better manage your money.

We understand overdrafts can happen, from the gas pump to a simple cup of coffee. That’s why we offer Balance+ to help you with day-to-day debit card purchases made on your checking account. Once enrolled, you can overdraw your checking account up to $200 with no fees—and no catches. Any negative balance is due immediately, otherwise we will use your next deposit or transfer to pay back the negative balance.

Balance+ is not a line of credit and is not guaranteed. All debit card purchases are authorized at our discretion.

What transactions are covered by Balance+?

Balance+ covers:

  • Debit card purchases

It does not cover transactions such as:

  • Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers
  • ATM transactions
  • Cash back at a store checkout
  • Checks you write
  • Payments made with Zelle®

We review each debit card purchase that could overdraw your account and authorize the transaction at our discretion.
